Captain Jack Sparrow's back on deck

At Beverly Hills' Montage Hotel, the 47-year-old from Owensboro, Kentucky, is reminiscing about how his early ambition was to be an actor who worked on interesting independent films, but along the way he became a heart-throb and face of the multi-billion-dollar Pirates of the Caribbean movie franchise.

"It's interesting to experience that kind of a ride after essentially 20 years of enjoying a career based on failures, then suddenly something clicks," Depp says.

"The weird thing is I never changed a thing. The process is still the process. The fact people decided to see a movie I was in was probably the most shocking thing I've been through."

The fourth chapter, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, will earn Depp a reported $33 million, one of the biggest pay days for an actor in Hollywood.

"It's not my fault," he says, laughing. "I did my best, you know, even to a point of trying to get fired on the first one, but they couldn't bring themselves to do it."

It has largely been forgotten, thanks to the $2.4 billion the first three Pirates films earned Disney, that studio executives had questions about Depp's decision to portray Capt Jack Sparrow in the original, 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, as an odd, slurring, wobbly character.

Executives wondered if Sparrow was supposed to be drunk. They worried whether this was the way the lead of a $130 million family film should act.
While he and Australian Oscar winner Geoffrey Rush, as the indestructible Capt Hector Barbossa, return in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are not part of the cast.

Another Oscar winner, Penelope Cruz, is introduced as Angelica, a feisty Spanish pirate and former love of Sparrow, while British actor Ian McShane is introduced as the notorious Blackbeard.
Audiences will quite likely eventually see Capt Sparrow in a wheelchair, with Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirming fifth and sixth chapters are in the pipeline.

A DirecTV satellite dish sits atop a home in Palo Alto, Calif., in this 2010 file photo. DirecTV, the nation's largest satellite TV operator, launches Thursday a new 'premium' service, offering Hollywood movies to subscribers within eight weeks of their theater debut.I think he’s nuts,” says his buddy, Brad Bone, rolling his eyes. “Thirty bucks is just way too much money when it will be available on DVD in a month anyway. I guess if you have money to burn for lattes, like Mr. Money bags here, you can afford it. But otherwise, what’s the attraction?”

The two comments frame a debate that has been percolating since March when DirecTV – a direct broadcast satellite service based in El Segundo, California – announced plans to launch premium video on demand, a service which will make major studio movies available on TV sets sooner than ever after the theater release of the film. Sony Pictures is first out of the gate today, and will soon be followed by Universal Pictures’ “The Adjustment Bureau,” Fox Searchlight’s comedy, “Cedar Rapids,” and “Hall Pass” from Warner Bros. – all available less than 60 days after their theatrical debuts. Studios will receive from $21 to $24 of the rental price, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Britney Spears voted a top Hollywood mum

Pop star Britney Spears has been voted one of the hottest mums in Hollywood - despite not actually having custody of her own children.

Britney, 29, came third in a US television survey behind actresses Halle Berry, 44, and Angelina Jolie, 35.

But the Till The World Ends singer is said to be planning a court bid to win back custody of sons Sean Preston, five, and Jayden James, four, later this year.

For the time being, online voters in a US cable television poll think Britney is back to her hot self and ready to care for her two boys again.

Salma Hayek, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Beckinsale, Christina Aguilera, Teri Hatcher and Monica Bellucci, rounded off the top ten hot Hollywood mums.

Britney Spears, Rihanna to Whip Up "S and M" Remix

Rihanna and Britney Spears are set to collaborate on a new song.

That song is believed to be a remix of the former's hit, "S&M".

Rihanna announced it first, writing this on Twitter: "I got a sexy collaboration coming your way super-dupa soon! By popular demand... it's Britney bitch!"

Spears' manager replied: "Rihanna you're such a tease! I like it, like it..."

Rihanna tweeted last week asking fans whether they would like to see her rework the song with another pop star, and if so, who. Britney seems like a great fit.

They've got their work cut out to top the original video, though:

Will Britney Spears Marry Jason Trawick?

Is Britney Spears ready to become a bride once more?

As she enjoys mammoth sales and the strongest reviews of her career for seventh studio album Femme Fatale, will she settle down for good with Jason Trawick?

"Maybe someday," she teases. "Never say never!"

Not a glowing quote, but she adds: "We have such a great time together! He makes me laugh, and are so comfortable being ourselves. I've never been happier!"

A family source says that the blissful pair will likely wed down the road, as Jason Trawick "was one of the only people who stuck by her through everything."

In 2007 and early 2008, Spears lost custody of her sons Sean, 5, and Jayden, 4, to ex Kevin Federline, and was briefly admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

Trawick, then her agent and now her boyfriend of two years, never wavered.

"[Jason] was someone she felt she could be her true self with. [Marriage] is what they talk about and the direction they're going in," the insider says.

Spears, who just released her new "Till The World Ends" video, does look so much healthier these days, don't you think? We're glad she's happy.

Warner Bros. becomes first studio to offer movie rentals through Facebook

Warner Bros. is hoping to leverage the popularity of social networking juggernaut Facebook by becoming the first Hollywood studio to offer movies directly through the site. Facebook users will be able to purchase and rent titles from the Warner Bros. catalog using Facebook Credits and play, pause and resume the movies through their Facebook account for up to 48 hours from the time of purchase. An initial test offering of The Dark Night to fans who "Liked" said movie on Facebook can now rent the title through the movie's official Facebook page, with additional titles to be made available in the coming months.

With over 600 million registered users – more than half of whom, according to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, use the site every day – contributing to Facebook currently being the most-visited site on the Web, it's not surprising that Warner Bros. is keen to tap into such a this huge potential. And with Facebook retaining 30 percent of all the revenue earned through its Facebook Credits virtual currency, the service will obviously be mutually beneficial.

In addition to being able to watch purchased movies in full screen, users will also have full Facebook functionality to let them post comments on the movie, interact with their Facebook friends and update their status. Over the 48-hour rental period, users will also be able to pause the movie, log out of their Facebook account and pick up where they left off when they log back in.

"Facebook brings compelling attributes to video and web TV distributed on its platform. It would immediately mix the social and TV in a way that would be interactive and viral, drawing on its thriving developer community to enhance the proposition further with attractive applications," says Ovum Principal Analyst, Eden Zoller, who believes the Warner Bros. deal marks the start of a more concerted move by Facebook into video services and web TV.

However, Facebook hasn't announced plans to launch a paid video service of its own. The movies offered through the rental application, which Warner Bros. developed independently of Facebook, will be hosted and streamed via a third party. But with more and more users getting their video fix online and Facebook already claiming a spot in the list of top 10 video sites in the U.S. relying only on user generated content, the Warner bros. announcement isn't likely to be welcomed by existing online video services such as Netflix.

The Dark Knight test offering is currently restricted to Facebook members in the U.S., with the cost per rental 30 Facebook Credits (US$3), which is the same price charged by Apple's iTunes Store to rent the movie. Warner Bros. says it will make additional titles available for rental on a regular basis over the coming months – The Social Network, released by Columbia, won't be one of them.

Five Reasons Why Liam Neeson Is on Top of the Box Office

The actor's latest action thriller, "Unknown," took in $25.6 million during its opening weekend.

The Liam Neeson film Unknown topped the box office over the holiday weekend with a $25.6 million bow, in a surprise victory over teen entry I Am Number Four. Here are five reasons why the actor took the No. 1 spot:
our editor recommends
'Unknown' Director Jaume Collet-Serra Believes Liam Neeson Is an Ideal Action Star (Berlin)
Unknown: Review (Film)
'Unknown' Tops Sluggish Holiday Weekend Box Office With $25.6 Million

1. He's a relative newcomer to the action genre -- at 58. With other action stars including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and Sylvester Stallone aging, Neeson could conceivably be considered a "fresh face" in the genre -- despite being 58 years old. "Ever since big names like Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Jean-Claude Van Damme got a bit long in the tooth to making action movies there has been a battle to fill the void," writes David Schuster of Chicago Now. "And into the fray over the last year has been Liam Neeson. Not exactly the action star person you would expect but with Taken and now the recent release Unknown, Neeson has proven to be a pretty sure box-office attraction."

2. But, his age isn't showing. In both Taken and Unknown, Neeson shows that he can still throw a punch with the best of them, at times fighting multiple -- and sometimes younger -- attackers at once. "When you watch Liam Neeson chase down his daughter’s abductors in Taken, shoving people up against walls or chopping them in the windpipe, or when you watch him get all Bourne again -- now puzzled, now ice-cool, now angry, now really angry -- in this weekend’s hit thriller Unknown, you don’t think something like, 'Wow, he moves pretty good for a guy his age,'" writes Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman. "You think: 'Get the f--- out of the way. He means business.' "

3. He reignited the action genre with Taken, and stuck to the same formula with Unknown. Two years ago, Neeson made his first big move into the action genre with Taken, which surprised box-office observers. On opening day, the movie made $9.4 million, the best opening day ever for a Super Bowl Weekend; overall, the movie made a total of $226.9 million at the worldwide box office. The movie received generally mixed reviews, but its box-office performance suggested that moviegoers were hungry for action thrillers. And with many reviewers noting the similarities between Taken and Unknown -- and some, including The Hollywood Reporter, claiming the newer film is better than the 2009 title -- it's perhaps no surprise that fans of the first movie turned out likely expecting more of what they enjoyed the first time around. "Although [Unknown] features the same star and, in some ways, the same framework as the Paris-based shoot-'em-up [Taken], Unknown swaps the nons for neins by changing the setting to Germany," writes THR's Jordan Mintzer. "It also boasts better action set pieces, a handful of convincing cameos and unexpected reversals late in the script."

4. He's a highly acclaimed actor -- a thinking man's action hero. Neeson has earned Oscar, Golden Globe and Independent Spirit noms for roles in films including Schindler's List, Kinsey and Michael Collins. And despite mixed reviews for Unknown, many critics had good things to say about the star. So unlike other action stars whose characters arguably use their brawn much more than their brains, Neeson seems to inject a level of intelligence into his roles -- even as he's firing bullets and punching out foes. "Unlike Harrison Ford, who usually plays a grouch with muscles, Neeson suggests the intellect of someone who might have stayed awake in college classes; he's as plausible as an Ivy League scientist as he is a thug for hire," writes Time's Richard Corliss.

5. He's relatable. Neeson doesn't have the movie-star good looks of say, a Brad Pitt, or the physique of an in-his-heyday Arnold Schwarzenegger. He's got flaws, and he seems more like a guy you could bump into on the street. That makes him more accessible to audiences. Additionally, there is a good deal of public sentiment toward the actor since he lost his wife, actress Natasha Richardson, in a skiing accident two years ago. Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra has said Neeson's ability to connect with the audience on another level the reason he wanted Neeson to star in his movie: "The fact is in this movie you don't have much time to get to know the character before he goes crazy. I needed someone who, in a very short time, would give us something to like him, to root for him. And I knew Liam would deliver. He has the presence. Anything he says as an actor you believe."

Paris Hilton Sexy Burlesque Look For 30th Birthday Bash

Paris Hilton celebrated her 30th birthday with a party in the Hollywood Hills last night. She wore a bright scarlet burlesque outfit and arrived at the event with her boyfriend Cy Waits.

Three hundred people attended, including rapper Lil Wayne, comedienne Kathy Griffin, and sister Nicky, at a 1920s-themed party in the Hollywood Hills.

Prior to the event she tweeted, "Getting ready for my big birthday bash tonight! So excited! Yay! :)"

The reality TV star officially passes the milestone on Thursday, but she began celebrating two days early when Waits surprised her with a bright yellow Lexus, a day after the pair enjoyed a romantic Valentine's Day meal together.

Hilton was photographed hugging and kissing Waits after the sports car was delivered to her driveway.

Booze and Boobs: A Night in the Life of Charlie Sheen...

Bombshell McGee may not have enjoyed herself in Las Vegas this week with Charlie Sheen, but a witness tells TMZ the actor was in heaven at The Palms Hotel and Casino.

Detailing a penthouse full of "big booby blonde girls fighting for his attention," this source got a look at Sheen's suite and said: "It looked like porn star auditions... the girls were all over him and he just sat back and took it all in."

The Two and a Half Men star "loved the attention" and seemed like he was "in his environment," this onlooker added. Guests included McGee, her pal Lindsay Sinai and Bree Olson.

Tragically, however, Sheen came down with what his rep described as an "ear infection" immediately following his return to Los Angeles and arrived late to the set of his terrible sitcom.

For Sheen's sake, let's hope that "ear infection" doesn't leave sores on his mouth.

Wednesday night's (February 2) Austin audition episode only highlighted one singer who seemed like he has an actual shot at this thing. Ladies and gentleman, say hello to John Wayne Schulz.

Producers were enamored with his name. (Because they're British and don't realize that nobody cares about John Wayne anymore.) But I have a feeling that American audiences are going to be enamored with Schulz's Southern charm, 10 gallon hat and heartwarming rendition of Brooks and Dunn's "Believe." (Not to be confused with Cher's hit of the same name. Band name not to be confused with aforementioned sister/brother duo Brooks and Dull.)

Compared to 16-year-old Scott McCreery (who we met last week in Nashville), Schulz's voice is far more versatile. And where McCreery's audition was full of "ain't I cute?" smirks, Schulz closed his eyes and completely lost himself in the music. His emotional delivery rang so true that I would have sported the same goosebumps even if I hadn't known that he was trying out as a favor to his breast cancer suffering mom.

Now that we're on the topic, let me count the ways that I love Vicky (aka Mama Schulz).

1. Mama Schulz wore a lime green top to match her son's shirt. Stop it. (Don't stop.)

2. Mama Schulz is an "American Idol" fan. She's one of us, you guys.

3. Mama Schulz gave birth to a dude that looks exactly like Armie Hammer. "The Social Network" taught us that two Armie Hammers are better than one, and now we can have that without the expensive CGI step.

4. After the judges shared the good news with her, Mama Schulz replied without hesitation, "I hope you won't be disappointed in him." Swoon.

Mama Schulz is so damn perfect, I'll even forgive her husband for making a veiled slam at Seacrest's less-than-"manly" ways.

While I wasn't a huge fan of Austin's audition episode (Schulz aside), I would be a hypocrite to dis the first show this season that wasn't overrun by 15-year-olds.

It was no accident that the youngest contestant of the night — 17-year-old ball of frayed nerves Hollie Cavanagh — would have been better served had she been told to come back in a few years after her "At Last" had more keys than a janitor's ring.

Instead, Cavanagh collapsed into tears, prompting Jennifer Lopez to give her a second chance ... after the break. Ironically, Hollie chose Miley Cyrus' "The Climb" as her new number, a song that celebrates the journey over the outcome. If she truly believed in the song's message, why did Hollie weep like Paris in a cop car while the judges' decided her fate? If it ain't about how fast you get there, and if it ain't about what's waiting on the other side, why are you having a teenage meltdown?

Stupidly, the judges saw a bawling, nervous mess and thought, "Yeah, she'll handle this show well. Here's a Golden Ticket." At the very least, her sob-filled "Climb" was like a sneak peek at her results show elimination performance. Just add more apathetic semi-finalists crowding around her in a half-hearted group hug and voila!

The night ended with the introduction of likable schlub Casey Abrams. Between his Seth Rogen/"Fraggle Rock" comparisons and his Jedi-chic attire, we were set up to think that he'd drunkenly burp up a bad Lady Gaga cover. Instead, the 19-year-old Idyllwild native rocked an unexpected bluesy Ray Charles homage. His herky-jerky performance and throwback schtick brings to mind season five champ Taylor Hicks. His affinity for scat evokes season six also-ran Leslie Hunt. Not exactly the mainstream superstar material "Idol" is hoping to launch this season, but the guy has a winning personality and a passion for the melodica. What's not to love?

What did you think of Austin? Did you "awww" when Marc Anthony stopped in to smooch his wife? What did you make of the judges' claim that Jacqueline Dunford and Nick Fink were the first "Idol" power couple? (I think David Cook and Kimberly Caldwell would beg to differ.) Was it just me or did you get the impression that Seacrest has experienced "belt buckle damage" before? Do you think Casey has the chops (musical, not mutton) to earn those Taylor Hicks comparisons? And do you even remember Janelle Arthur?! Leave a comment below, and to keep up with all my "Idol" goofiness,

'American Idol' Season 10 Premiere: New Judges welcome

Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez shine in their debut, judging crazy good and just plain crazy singers.

There's a very good reason "American Idol" has been the top show on TV for the past six years running: Its producers know how to milk the drama, cue the laughs and suck you in with just the right mix of goofy, crazy good and, well, just plain crazy singers.

All that and more was on display on the first night of the show's 10th season on Wednesday (January 19), an evening "Idol" fans have been patiently waiting for since last summer when things went a bit haywire with their favorite show.

Though "Idol" normally exists inside a bubble that is immune to the outside world, there was no getting around the earthshaking drama that occurred over the past seven months, including the departure of founding lead judge Simon Cowell and the exit of short-timers Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi.

Rules were changed, the age limit was lowered to 15 and just about every name in the pop world was bandied about as a possible replacement for Cowell. So it was fitting that the top of Wednesday night's show included a montage of the rabid speculation about who the new judges would be.

And, despite assuring viewers that this season is not about the new kids on the block — Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler and pop star Jennifer Lopez — but about the singers, there was also a splashy montage that followed introducing the new panelists, packed with plenty of glamour shots and slow-motion catwalk struts.

What nobody knew was how these two new faces would fit into the well-established "Idol" mix. The good news is, they slipped in just fine, and, in fact, Tyler quickly proved to be just the breath of fresh (and sometimes wacky) air the show needed going into the season of uncertainty.

The first stop on the televised audition rounds was New Jersey, and right away, the new judges asserted their personalities, with Lopez fondly remembering a previous contestant and giving her some tough-love advice on making it in Hollywood. Tyler's charms shone through in nearly every audition, including one in which he mimed along, stomping his feet and rapping his knuckles on the table to the Ray Charles song "Hallelujah I Love Her So."

The show's first 15-year-old auditioner, Pennsylvania's Kenzie Palmer, did a nice job on Carrie Underwood's "We're Young and Beautiful," but Lopez was the only one feeling it until she convinced her cohorts to rethink their votes with a little of her Jenny From the Block sass.

As always, the real test came when the clunkers stepped to the big "Idol" logo and blew it. "You gotta pull those wild horses in," Tyler counseled one contestant, as Lopez struggled to say no and break a heart. "This is awful. Oh my God, I hate this!" she wailed in mock pain, biting her lip while saying "no" even as Tyler quickly got the hang of letting the kids down easy.

The night's first heartstring moment came when 16-year-old Robbie Rosen — who spent some of his childhood in a wheelchair — sang a soulful take on the Beatles' "Yesterday" and won over the panel with his schoolboy charm. "Beautiful!" Tyler said to the kid who had watched every season of the show and long dreamt of getting his shot. They also fell for spunky Southern belle Victoria Huggins, 16, of Lumberton, North Carolina, who surprised the judges with a full-throated "Midnight Train to Georgia" and charmed them with her oversize personality.

As always in the early rounds, it was mostly a parade of crackpots, nasal wheezers and goofy white guys in plaid shirts singing R&B — badly. "Did you eat a lot of paint chips as a child?" Tyler asked after a murderous take on a Tina Turner tune. Whereas Cowell used to slay them with meanness, Tyler seemed to have instantly perfected the art of the playful, entertaining putdown, adding a new wrinkle to the judge's mix.

The king of the reject singers was Japanese native Yoji "Pop" Asano, a 25-year-old Brooklyn student who sang (OK, squeaked) Miley Cyrus' "Party in the U.S.A." like nobody ever has, or should, while tossing in some spastic Michael Jackson dance moves.

And then there are the ones you never see coming, like twitchy Ashley Sullivan, 25, who confused the panel with a bombastic show tune that initially got her the boot. But when the waterworks started coming and Sullivan's quirky (OK, unhinged) personality started to shine, Lopez and Tyler couldn't bear to say no, putting her through to Hollywood over Randy Jackson's objections.

Yonkers, New York, native Melinda Ademi, a 16-year-old daughter of immigrant refugees from war-torn Kosovo, had the kind of dramatic story arc custom-made for "Idol." But she also happened to have some serious pipes too. Her "If I Ain't Got You" by Alicia Keys won her a golden ticket, inspiring Tyler to quip, "You won the lottery twice."

Other promising prospects included 20-year-old Times Square singing waitress Devyn Rush, who did a nicely nuanced job on a jazzy "God Bless the Child." Lopez, who knows a thing or two about being a glamour puss, advised Rush to match her golden inside with some glittery duds that would make her look like a star as well.

Staten Island's Brielle Von Hugel had another heartstring-tugging backstory. In addition to being a fresh-faced beauty with a flower in her hair, she grew up crooning with her doo-wop-singing dad, who was diagnosed with throat cancer before her sweet 16. Her "Endless Love" melted hearts, and the judges made it official after bringing her Pops in to witness her golden-ticket moment.

As is often the case, the producers saved the best for last, with tough-luck Bronx kid Travis Orlando, 16, telling his tale of surviving his borough's mean streets and life in a shelter before doing a soulful Jason Mraz-like take on the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." Tyler asked for some more, so Orlando served up a scatty slide through Mraz's "I'm Yours" that worked for the panel. They brought out his ecstatic twin brother and overjoyed mom, who squeezed him in a family sandwich as Lopez told him to "really bring it in Hollywood, OK?"

Christina Aguilera and Julianne Hough Golden Globe FIGHT

I knew something more scandalous than some minor flirting and a star hook-up had to of happened during the Golden Globes hoopla! According to E! Online, Christina Aguilera and Julianne Hough were involved in an angry exchange of words while at a pre-Globes bash Friday at the SoHo House in West Hollywood.

“Christina really got in her face,” an eyewitness told E! News, saying that Aguilera unleashed a verbal barrage at Hough.

Onlookers said Aguilera even grabbed Hough, leading the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ hoofer to snap, “Don’t touch me!”

Before the two separated, Aguilera threatened to torpedo Hough’s burgeoning country singing career. Hough was said to be “visibly upset” by the incident, according to one insider. “The whole thing was troubling. People felt bad for Julianne.”

The two reportedly didn’t get along while filming ‘Burlesque’ and it’s evident there are still unresolved issues, although it’s unclear what caused their drama at the party. Aguilera’s rep, of course, refers to this report as “nonsense.” No word yet from anyone in Hough’s camp.

It seems Christina always has a problem with someone.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift: It's Over!

Good. We were sick of writing the word Swiftenhaal anyway...

Multiple sources confirm that Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift have ended their brief romance.

The couple split prior to New Year's Eve, with Gyllenhaal actually being the one to put the kabosh on a romance that began in October.

"Jake reached out to her and started all of this, but now he’s not acting as interested," an insider tells Us Weekly. "He said he wasn't feeling it anymore and was uncomfortable with all the attention they got. He also said he could feel the age difference."

After initially attempting to keep its fling private, the duo was spotted out multiple times in December. Most witnesses said they looked very much into each other.

"Taylor is really upset," this source added. "We told her not to move so fast with this but she didn't listen."

Hey, at least it will make good material for a future hit song!

American Idol: Eight Big Changes

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - New judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler aren't the only changes in store for the 10th season of "American Idol," premiering January 19 on Fox. Here are eight other fixes designed to help the talent show recover from a disappointing 2010 outing.

1. UPDATED SET

The set is undergoing substantial modification, including the location of the band, led by musical director Ray Chew.

2. FASTER ELIMINATION

The elimination process is speeding up considerably; viewers at home will still shape the semifinals, but the Top 24 may go directly to 12 contestants -- or 15, as producers are still mulling over a final number.

3. ONLINE VOTING

The voting procedure will be overhauled. Plans are in the works for an online integration that would include bonus content and the ability to vote with a click.

4. NEW LIVING ARRANGEMENT

An Idol mansion. Newly returned executive producer Nigel Lythgoe "was keen on it," a source says.

5. ORIGINAL SONGS

Producer-songwriters handpicked by Interscope Records boss Jimmy Iovine will mentor the contestants. Rodney Jerkins (Janet Jackson, Britney Spears), Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Pussycat Dolls), Timbaland (Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado) and Alex Da Kid (Rihanna, Eminem) will help them with song selection, then arrange and produce the musical accompaniment -- a prerecorded track augmented by a live band -- specifically for each contestant. And for the first time ever, the contest won't be limited solely to cover songs.

6. THEME WEEK MAKEOVERS

Theme weeks will also get a makeover. "We're not going to ask a country singer to sing an R&B song, or an R&B singer to do Led Zeppelin," Iovine explains. "If the theme is '80s or Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, every song will be customized to that contestant." What's most important, he adds, is that the song suit the finalist's voice.

7. POSSIBLE MUSIC VIDEOS

While there has been serious talk of music videos to test the contestants' acting skills, and how they incorporate backup dancers and even their ability to replicate iconic video images from the past, no final decision has been made and one Fox insider says it could be off the table -- for now. (More than ever before, Idol is in flux.)

"With music breaking on the Internet, the visual aspect of any pop star is huge," Alex Da Kid says. "We want to make (the process) as real as possible."

8. FASTER MUSIC RELEASES

Instead of taking the summer months to work in the studio and releasing an album in the fall, finalists will have music out as the season progresses. "The sands of time are slipping through the hour glass and you want to capitalize while the public is so engaged in the story of winning or losing," says Ron Fair, chairman of Geffen Records. "Normally with a new artist, the world isn't waiting. In American Idol's case, the public is -- they want to hear something great. With a big tail wind like that, you want to set sail."

Michael Lohan: 'Lindsay leaving Hollywood'

Michael Lohan has insisted that daughter Lindsay will move out of Hollywood upon her release from rehab.

Talking to HollywoodLife.com, Michael denied rumours that the actress planned to stay in her West Hollywood pad despite being advised to relocate.

"Go to the apartment right now and you’ll see three huge trucks moving Lindsay's things out," he said.

"I don’t know where people are getting this stuff, but she is moving."

Michael also commented again on Lindsay's reported release from the Betty Ford Center, reiterating that he would not reveal the details.

"I can’t say anything about that. But earlier reports this morning were closest to the truth," he explained.
