Pitch, not rash shots caused batting collapse: MS Dhoni

HAMBANTOTA: Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni blamed the unpredictable pitch for his team's abysmal batting performance in the lost second ODI against Sri Lanka, rejecting suggestions that rash shots led to the stunning collapse.
India were on Tuesday bowled out for 138 in 33.3 overs -- their fourth-lowest ODI total in the past five years -- by the host team, which chased down the target in under 20 overs. The five-mrrently tied 1-1.

Apple releases OS X Mountain Lion system upgrade

OS X Mountain Lion makes it easier to share material to social networks and also introduces a notification panel similar to that found on many smartphones.
The news was revealed in the company's third quarter earnings release.
Mac sales were 2% up on the year, but the results fell short of many analysts' forecasts.
The firm's shares dropped about 5% in after hours trading on Wall Street.
Mobile to Mac Apple first announced the latest update to its operating system in February. The update continues a trend to introduce features to its desktop and laptop families that have already been implemented on its iPad and iPhone mobile devices.
These include the ability to upload and synchronise material with its iCloud internet storage service; the introduction of the iMessage service allowing text message-like chats between the firm's computers and handsets; the ability to easily share material to Twitter; and an application to compare the user's video game scores against those of their friends.
The firm has also taken steps to aid its expansion in China including the adoption of Baidu as a search service built into its web browser's toolbar, and buttons to make it easy to share material to the Sina Weibo microblog, and the video sites Youku and Tudou.
However, the firm's decision to keep its Mac system distinct from iOS for mobile devices is set to be challenged by October's Windows 8 release by Microsoft.
Microsoft is offering users the chance to run the same system on both their tablets and desktop computers, making it easier to share software between them.
Windows 8 - and its touchscreen Metro apps - have been described by Microsoft as the biggest revision to its interface in over a decade. But one analyst said Mountain Lion was more of an incremental step forward.
"While there are a lots of new features this is not a major upgrade like the last version Lion was," said Brian Blau, research director at tech research firm Gartner.
"But Apple has also been improving its Office-like software and creation applications along the way, so maybe it didn't need such a big revision. And you have to bear in mind it is only charging $20 [£13.99 in UK] for the change."
By contrast Microsoft is charging $39.99 for a Windows 8 upgrade, while Linux-based systems, such as Ubuntu and Debian, can be downloaded for free.

The Ranbir Kapoor - Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has been making headlines for the past few days. Now yet again, the Dharma Productions film has come into the spotlight as reportedly the super-hit track 'Jumma Chumma De De' from Amitabh Bachchan starrer Hum will be recreated in the film. The modern day version of this song will feature Ranbir and the actor will also be singing a few lines himself in the song. Apparently, the makers wanted naughty, perky rhythms and lines that would suit Ranbir, and hence settled for the colourful track. Though sources in Dharma refused to comment on the track's inclusion, Adarsh Gupta, Business Head, Saregama, has stated that the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani team has acquired the rights of the chartbuster. sources:http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/news/1511523/Ranbir-to-croon-%27Jumma-Chumma%27%3F

Assam burns, 32 dead, thousands homeless

Sectarian strife raged in interior areas of Assam's three districts on Tuesday even as security personnel shot dead four miscreants, taking the death toll in the region to 32.

A worried Chief Minister Tarun Gogoiurged Home Minister PChidambaram and Defence Minister AK Antony to rush more paramilitary forces and troops to end the savagery.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi called up Gogoi to know the latest situation. An estimated 40,000 people have fled their homes looking for safer areas.
Many who lost their dear and near ones wept openly.
A total of 28 people have died in the violence in both Kokrajhar and Chirangdistricts since July 19 as mobs of Bodos, who are tribals, and the Bengali-speaking Muslims set upon each other.
On Tuesday, security forces gunned down four miscreants in Kokrajhar, pushing the death toll in the two districts to 32, authorities said.
Shoot-at-sight orders and an indefinite curfew have been imposed in the worst-hit Kokrajhar district. In Chirang, a night curfew has been clamped from 6 pm to 6 am.
Miscreants continued to set fire to houses left vacant by thousands who have fled to safer areas. The fire brigade and security forces struggled to put down dozens of fires.
Inspector General of Police SN Singh said that 19 people had been killed inKokrajhar and nine in Chirang.
He said the situation in the region was tense, and added that additional security forces had arrived in the two districts. More forces were being sent, Singh said.
"Incidents of violence are taking place mainly in the interior areas of the districts. About 60 villages, mostly abandoned, were burnt by miscreants in the two districts," said another official.
The violence has also spread to Dhubri district bordering Bangladesh. Police opened blank fire there on Tuesday to contain unrest.
In Dhubri, curfew has been imposed in some "sensitive areas" includingGouripur, Golakganj, Bilasipara and Chapar.
The three districts - Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri - share a contiguous landscape. While Dhubri is bounded by Bangladesh in the south, Kokrajharand Chirang border Bhutan.
More than 40,000 people have abandoned their homes and taken shelter in relief camps set up by the district administration.
According to official sources, the violence started July 19 after gunmen attacked two student leaders in Magurbari Thursday.
Following this, four former Bodo militants were shot dead.
Both the communities then began attacking each other, accusing each other of orchestrating ethnic cleansing.
Assam's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Nilamoni Sen Deka and Revenue Minister Prithibi Majhi were deputed by Chief Minister Gogoi to visit the troubled spots.
Director General of Police Jayanta Narayan Choudhury reviewed the security scenario with police officials.
Railway officials said the running of several trains had been severely affected. All inbound and outbound trains were halted at various stations between Guwahati and Alipurduar.
This has left thousands of train passengers stranded in the state.
"While 20 trains have been rescheduled, 12 trains which were supposed to pass through the violence affected areas have been cancelled," said a North Frontier Railway official.
Some miscreants attacked the Guwahati-bound Rajdhani Express atGosaigaon Tuesday, forcing the authorities to take the train back toAlipurduar.

Ek Tha Tiger in a new controversy

Even though Salman Khan's forthcoming film Ek Tha Tiger has been creating waves with its promos, all is not well with the film. Vikram Vashishtha, who happens to be the nephew of real life spy (late) Ravindra Kaushik, has sent a legal notice to the production company (Yash Raj Films) asking for a special screening of Ek Tha Tiger. The copies of the legal notice have also been sent to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the Film & TV Producers Guild and Film Federation of India.

Talking about this issue, Vashishtha told a leading daily that (late) Ravindra Kaushik, his maternal uncle, who was with RAW (Research Analysis Wing), displayed his talent at the national level dramatic meet in Lucknow, which was also witnessed by some officials of the Intelligence Wing. He was then contacted and offered a job for the secret intelligence in Pakistan. Later, he was sent to Pakistan for the purpose.

Vashishtha also added that the promos of Ek Tha Tiger bore a striking resemblance to his uncle's experiences in Pakistan and hence his family has sought legal assistance to either have a look at the original script or view the film before it releases. Meanwhile, Madhav Mitra, Vashishtha's counsel claims that the resemblance is on the account that the promos show that ISI (Pakistan agency) and RAW (Indian Agency) indulged in day-to-day war. He also added that the promos reveal that the agent named 'Tiger' worked in Pakistan and had an affair with a Pakistani girl, fought for the country as well as for his love. He reasoned out stating that since Shashi Vashishtha, the mother of his client Vikram is (late) Ravindra's only sister, the family has the full right to either go through the certified screenplay or watch it prior to national and international release. sources: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/more/news/view/id/1510144

100 killed as Iraq suffers worst day of violence in two years

Iraq suffered its worst day of violence for two years yesterday (Monday), with more than 100 people killed in a wave of bombings and shootings.
An attack by gunmen on an army post at Dhuluiya, 45 miles north of Baghdad, in which 16 soldiers were shot dead or killed by grenades, heralded a series of bombings across the country. Car bombs hit Sadr City in Baghdad, a large, poor Shia neighbourhood which is a regular target for sectarian killing, Hussainiya, another Shia suburb, the towns of Taji and Khan Bani Saad just to the north of the city, and Kirkuk, a city in the north contested by Arabs, Kurds and minority populations.

Insurgents mounted at least 27 different attacks in 18 cities, security and medical officials said. Officials reported at least 107 people killed by Monday afternoon, with more than 200 wounded. William Hague, the British Foreign Secretary, condemned the attacks, saying: "Coming at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, a time of peaceful reflection and prayer, these attacks demonstrate an appalling disregard for human life. We will continue to support the government of Iraq in its efforts to defeat terrorism, and to provide security for all Iraqis."

The combination attack is a signature al-Qaeda tactic and demonstrates that, despite a decrease of violence overall and claims that some of its fighters have travelled over the border to Syria, the terrorist organisation can still pull off regular "spectaculars".

Despite being largely brought under control by an alliance of American force and local tribal militias in the years before US troops withdrew from Iraq, the local al-Qaeda franchise has maintained the ability to strike every three to four weeks. Last month, 72 people were killed on one day during a series of bombings timed to coincide with a Shia religious festival.

At the weekend, the group posted a rare statement online saying it was "returning to strongholds" from which it withdrew during the US campaign, suggesting that it felt more confident since the final pull-out of American troops in December. "eThe majority of the Sunnis in Iraq support al-Qaeda and are waiting for its return," the statement, signed with the nom de guerre of its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The attack on Taji caused the highest casualty toll yesterday. In another trademark al-Qaeda tactic, a series of car bombs attracted the emergency services, which were then hit by a suicide bombing. At least 42 people were killd. sources: http://www.dnaindia.com/world/report_100-killed-as-iraq-suffers-worst-day-of-violence-in-two-years_1719005

Abhay Deol to star in Vibhu Puri's Bambai Fairy Tale

The buzz is that Abhay Deol is all set to star in debutant director Vibhu Puri's Bambai Fairy Tale. It is a period love story set in the city of dreams, Mumbai. Apparently, Abhay will not only star in the film but also produce it.

It's been a while since we last saw Abhay in an out and out romantic film. Defying his chocolate hero looks, the actor has been quite choosy about doing a love story. Even though he debuted in Imtiaz Ali's Socha Na Tha which was a romantic film, he has rarely been seen in one after, barring Anurag Kashyap's Dev D and the forgettable Aisha. His last film Shanghai was a political thriller. So it will be a nice change to see him in a romantic avatar once again.

A source close to Abhay reveals, "After Shanghai, Abhay was looking to do something entirely different. He loves to experiment with his image. When he heard the narration of Vibhu's story, he loved the idea. After a few meetings, the actor green lighted the project. He is also keen on producing the film but the talks are still on."

Reportedly, Vibhu, the writer of Saawariya, was supposed to make his directorial debut with Chenab Gandhi. Unfortunately, the film starring Amitabh Bachchan, Rajeev Khandelwal and Vidya Balan film got shelved due to the fallout with his producer, Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Interestingly, Bhansali's next, Ram Leela, is also a period love story set in Gujarat. Source: http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/more/news/view/id/1507208

Petrol price to be hiked by 70 paise a litre from midnight

MUMBAI: The state-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) have decided to increase petrol prices by over 70 paise a litre with effect from midnight, after two successive rounds of rate cuts in the last month. The increase in petrol prices was triggered by the increase in cost of Indian basket of crude oil prices in the last one month, which is hovering over $104 per barrel, according to Petroleum and Planning Analysis Cell (PPAC) data.

With effect from mid-night petrol prices would cost Rs 68.48 in Delhi, Rs 74.23 in Mumbai, Rs 73.16 in Chennai, Rs 73.61 in Kolkata, Rs 75.80 in Hyderabad and Rs 77.30 in Bangalore. Delhi witnessed a hike of 70 paisa per litre while Bangalore witnessed a hike of 91 paisa per litre over the prevailing prices.

"It has been decided by Indian Oil Corporation to increase petrol prices by Rs 0.70/litre with effect from midnight of 23-24 July, 2012," said a statement by India's largest fuel retailer Indian Oil Corporation adding that the said revision has been necessitated due to increasing international oil prices and movement in rupee-dollar exchange rate.

The average price of Indian basket of crude for the relevant pricing period considered is $101.28 per barrel while international petrol price is $111.59 per barrel and the rupee-dollar exchange rate is pegged Rs 55.36 against the dollar, forcing the state-owned firms to incur a loss of Rs 1.41 per litre on petrol sales in the domestic market.

"As the price movement is quite volatile, it has been decided that an increase of Rs 0.70 a litre (excluding state levies) may be effected at this juncture and the situation watched for some time depending upon which a further view will be taken at an appropriate time," said the IOC statement hinting at another price hike if the crude oil prices continue to rise.

The marginal hike in rate follows reductions last month by Rs 2.02 per litre on June 3 and Rs 2.46 a litre on June 29 after the Rs 7.54 per litre increase in rates, the biggest in the history, effected in May this year.

Oil firms have already lost over Rs 2300 crore on sale of petrol in April and May this year and IOC alone lost to tune of Rs 1050 crore.

The under recoveries (loss on sale of sensitive petroleum products below market prices) of the oil firms are projected to be Rs 1,60,000 crore as these firms are losing Rs 10 per litre on sale of diesel, Rs 27 per litre on sale of kerosene and Rs 319 per cylinder on sale of cooking gas.

Following are the revised petrol prices in four metros

Delhi Current Price: 67.78 Revised Price: 68.48 Increase: 0.70

Kolkata Current Price: 72.74 Revised Price: 73.61 Increase: 0.87

Mumbai Current Price: 73.35 Revised Price: 74.23 Increase: 0.88

Chennai Current Price: 72.27 Revised Price: 73.16 Increase: 0.89 Source: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/Petrol-price-to-be-hiked-by-70-paise-a-litre-from-midnight/articleshow/15108284.cms

She entered Hindi cinema at age 12.[2] She started as an extra in films in the early 1960s. She accepted small roles in big films like Mujhe Jeene Do and big roles in small budgeted stunt films like Boxer, Samson, Tarzan, and King Kong. In the 1960s, she starred in as many as 16 action films with freestyle wrestler Dara Singh and was labelled as a stunt film heroine.Dara Singh-Mumtaz pair had 10 of the 16 films as box office hits.Faulad, Veer Bhimsen, Samson , Hercules, Tarzan Comes to Delhi, Sikandar E Azam, Rustom-E-Hind, Raaka, Boxer, Daku Mangal Singh were her successful films with Dara Singh. In the films that the pair Dara Singh-Mumtaz did together, Dara's remuneration was 4.5 lakh per film and Mumtaz's salary was 2.5 lakh per film.[3] She first gained attention in a supporting role as a vamp in the A grade color hit film Mere Sanam (1965). The memorable sexy song "Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulphon Ka Andhera" was picturized on her. The success of the film led to another sizzling song "Aye dushman jaan" in another big-budget film Patthar Ke Sanam. Finally, she gained major attention when she played one of Dilip Kumar's leading ladies in Ram Aur Shyam (1967). The film became one of the top hits of the year, and she received her first Filmfare nomination as Best Supporting Actress. Suddenly, Mumtaz was flooded with offers but not for major leading lady roles. She supported Sharmila Tagore in several films in the late 1960s, such as for Saawan Ki Ghata, Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi, and Mere Humdum Mere Dost. She had a memorable song and dance number "Aaj Kal Tere Mere" with her co-star Shammi Kapoor in the hit film Brahmachari (1968). It took Raj Khosla's blockbuster Do Raaste (1969) starring Rajesh Khanna to finally make Mumtaz a full-fledged star. Oddly, it was an inconsequential girlfriend role, but director Khosla, so good at picturizing songs, filmed four hit songs on Mumtaz.[4] The film made her hugely popular, and she acknowledged that, even though she had a small role, it was still one of her favorite films.[2] In 1969, her film Do Raaste and Bandhan with Rajesh Khanna became top grossers of the year earning around 6.5 crores and 3 Crores respectively.[5] When earlier, she had played a small role as Rajendra Kumar's sister in Gehra Daag, now she was elevated to playing his leading lady in Tangewala. Shashi Kapoor who had earlier refused to work with her in Saccha Jootha because she was a "stunt film heroine" now wanted her to be his heroine in Chor Machaye Shor. Mumtaz acted in 108 films in a career that spanned just 15 years till 1977. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for one of her favorite films Khilona in 1970, and she was "very happy that the audience accepted her in an emotional role."[2] Mumtaz acted with Feroz Khan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Biswajeet but her pairing opposite Rajesh Khanna was the most popular with the audience and critics alike. Mumtaz had 8 superhits opposite Rajesh Khanna as the solo lead hero in the period 1969-1975.[6][7] Her own other favorite films from her carrer are Tere Mere Sapne for director Vijay Anand, as well as Roop Tera Mastana, Aap Ki Kasam, Prem Kahaniand Aaina. Mumtaz decided to marry millionaire Mayur Madhwani in 1974 and at that time shooting for three films Aap ki Kasam, Roti and Prem Kahani with Rajesh Khanna was yet to begin. She decided to complete these three films and complete her other pending projects of that time Lafange, Nagin and then leave the industry permanently. She returned for one final appearance 12 years later in the 1989 film Aandhiyan, which flopped in India and became silver jubilee hit in Pakistan and after that she turned down other film offers. In 1996 she received the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. In June 2008, she was honored for her "Achievement in Indian Cinema" by the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) in Bangkok. Mumtaz has featured recently in UniGlobe Entertainment's cancer docudrama 1 a Minute with a number of international stars. Mumtaz married Mayur Madhvani on 29 May 1974; they have two daughters, Natasha and Tanya.
