Two Hasidic publications in Brooklyn took the now-famous image of President Obama and his national security team watching a real-time video feed of the mission to kill Osama bin Laden and removed the two women from it.


The Hasidic newspaper Der Tzitung and the Hasidic magazine De Voch, as first reported at the blog Failed Messiah -- which covers the Orthodox Jewish community with a critical eye -- removed Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Audrey Tomason, director for counterterrorism on the National Security Staff.

The Washington Post prints an explanation from Der Tzitung stating that their removal from the photograph “in no way relegates them to a lower status... Because of laws of modesty, we are not allowed to publish pictures of women, and we regret if this gives an impression of disparaging to women, which is certainly never our intention. We apologize if this was seen as offensive.


And while one can of course debate the appropriateness of anyone making any light of such a serious military operation, however successful for the US, this photoshopped version of the photo is also making the rounds on the internet. (I first spotted it on the twitter feed of
