'World of Warcraft: Cataclysm'

'World of Warcraft: Cataclysm' sells 3.3 million in first 24 hours

Having already boasted last month about spurring "the biggest entertainment launch in history," Activision Blizzard is now saying it's home to "the fastest-selling PC game of all time."

Blizzard Entertainment announced in a statement Monday that the long-awaited expansion World of Warcraft: Cataclysm sold 3.3 million copies in the first 24 hours after launch.

The performance tops the day-one haul of World of Warcraft expansion and former record holder Wrath of the Lich King, which sold 2.8 million copies.

"We want to thank all of our new, existing, and returning players throughout the world for their incredible enthusiasm and support, and we look forward to hearing what they think about all the new content," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime in a statement.

This is the third expansion for the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), which continues to dominate the PC realm. Back in October, Blizzard revealed the subscriber base for WoW topped 12 million.
